Laser Technology Empowers Customized Products

The Versatility of CO2 Lasers

CO2 lasers represent a unique class of industrial lasers that revolutionize materials processing technology thanks to their ability to efficiently cut, weld, and mark a wide range of materials. Although often overshadowed by new solid-state laser technologies, CO2 lasers remain indispensable in manufacturing applications.

Using carbon dioxide molecules as an excitation medium, it is able to absorb non-metallic materials such as wood, plastics, ceramics and textiles extremely well, enabling precise and fast cutting and marking with little thermal impact on the surrounding area.

CO2 lasers are used in a wide range of applications. In industrial manufacturing, it is commonly used in cutting applications in the automotive, aerospace and home appliance industries due to its ability to quickly cut sheet metal, composites and acrylic. It is also suitable for cutting leather, textiles and synthetics for delicate designs in the fashion and sportswear industries.

In addition, CO2 lasers have advantages for the welding of many plastic and non-metallic materials that are difficult or dangerous to weld using other methods. It is also suitable for surface modification processes that require precise control of surface properties, such as microstructuring, curing, and heat treatment.

Compared to visible/UV solid-state lasers, CO2 lasers offer a deeper depth of entry and higher average power when cutting through heavy, multi-layered materials. Its infrared wavelength also results in less thermal damage to the surrounding substrate.

Although new pumped solid-state laser technology now offers fiber delivery and higher efficiency, CO2 lasers are still the preferred solution for high-precision, high-speed machining of non-metallic substrates that require deep cutting and local heating. Its versatility in manufacturing makes it an important industrial asset.
