How to Permanently Mark Heat Numbers and IDs on Steel Pipes

A steel pipe may stay in a warehouse for weeks or months before shipment. During this time, it can be exposed to rain, dust, oil, rust, lifting equipment and repeated handling.

For pipe manufacturers, the problem is not simply how to print a number. The real question is whether the identification will still be readable when the customer receives the pipe.

Heat numbers, batch codes, material grades and pipe IDs are often linked to inspection records and production data. If a label falls off or an ink mark becomes unreadable, warehouse staff may have difficulty matching the pipe with the correct documents.

Why Temporary Can Be a Problem

Paint pens, labels and inkjet printers are widely used because they are fast and inexpensive.

They work well in many situations, but they are not always suitable for permanent traceability.

A label can be damaged during loading. Ink may fade or become covered by oil, rust or paint. On large industrial pipes stored outdoors, surface identification needs to survive much harsher conditions than a normal product label.

Large Pipes Should Not Be Moved Just for Marking

A small metal part can be placed under a desktop marker in seconds.

A six-meter pipe is different.

Moving long or large-diameter pipes to a separate marking station may require roller beds, cranes or forklifts. If marking itself only takes a short time, the handling process can take longer than the actual job.

A handheld marking head allows the operator to mark the pipe while it remains in its production or storage position.

Curved Surfaces Need Stable Positioning

Pipe marking is not exactly the same as marking a flat steel plate.

The head must remain stable on the curved surface. If the operator changes the angle or distance every time, character depth and alignment can become inconsistent.

For regular production, a simple positioning fixture can help operators place the marking head in the same position on every pipe.

Character size also matters. Very large text may not fit comfortably on small-diameter pipes.

Do Not Select the Machine Only by Maximum Depth

Buyers often ask whether a dot peen machine can mark 1 mm deep.

But deeper is not always better.

The required depth depends on:

Material hardness
Wall thickness
Surface condition
Whether the pipe will be painted
Character size
Production speed

A pipe that will later receive a coating may need a stronger mark than a finished pipe going directly into storage.

For serious projects, testing the actual material is more useful than comparing specification sheets.
