A serial number may take less than one minute to mark.
Moving a 500 kg casting to the marking station can take much longer.
This is a common problem in steel fabrication, foundries, machinery manufacturing and vehicle production. The marking process itself is simple, but the workpiece is too large, too heavy or already installed.

Consider a welded steel frame.
After cutting and welding, it may already be positioned for inspection or painting. If the serial number must be added at a fixed desktop marking station, the frame has to be lifted again.

The mark itself may only contain 15 or 20 characters.
Factories working with large parts quickly realize that reducing material movement can be more valuable than saving a few seconds of marking time.

For large logos or much wider content, the marking range should be confirmed before ordering.
Large industrial parts are rarely perfect polished plates.
Castings may have uneven surfaces. Forgings can have oxide scale. Steel structures may already have light rust or coating.
Dot peen marking works by creating physical indentations, so it is well suited to many industrial metal parts where permanent identification is more important than decorative appearance.

Still, the final result depends on material hardness, surface condition and required depth.
In a fabrication plant that already has compressed air, a pneumatic handheld marker can be practical for repeated industrial work.
