In a mold factory, every mold has its own identity. Mold number, cavity number, customer code, part name and maintenance record are not just simple text. They are part of production management.
When the mold is small, marking is not difficult. But many injection molds, die-casting molds and stamping molds are large and heavy. Some molds are difficult to move after assembly. Some are already placed beside the injection molding machine. If the factory only needs to add or change a number, moving the entire mold to a marking station wastes time and labor.
Handheld fiber laser marking provides a more flexible way.
The operator can carry the handheld marking head to the mold surface and mark directly on the required area. The machine does not need a large working table. The mold does not need to be lifted or transported. This is especially useful when the mold weight is high or the workshop space is limited.
Common marking content in mold factories includes mold number, cavity number, product model, customer logo, serial number, repair date and inspection mark. These marks must be clear and durable because molds are used for a long time. During production, molds may face oil, heat, cleaning, friction and repeated handling. Stickers and paint marks are easy to damage. Laser marking is more suitable because the information is directly created on the metal surface.
For example, a mold marked with “MOLD NO. FM-2086” and “CAVITY NO. 04” can be identified quickly by workers, engineers and quality inspectors. If there are several similar molds in the workshop, clear marking helps reduce mistakes. It also makes storage, maintenance and production scheduling easier.
Another practical advantage is modification work. Many mold factories receive urgent requests from customers. Sometimes they need to add a new logo, change a cavity code or mark repair information. If they send the mold to an outside marking supplier, it takes time and may delay delivery. With an in-house handheld Laser marking machine, the factory can complete this work by itself.
The marking effect is also more professional than manual engraving. Manual engraving may be uneven and depends heavily on worker skill. Pneumatic marking may leave deeper dots and stronger impact marks. Fiber laser marking can create fine lines, clear text and even QR codes or logos. For high-value molds, a cleaner mark improves the factory image.
Many buyers also care about operation difficulty. A handheld laser marking machine with a built-in touch screen can make daily work easier. Operators can create or import marking files, adjust size and position, and save templates for different mold models. If the factory often repeats the same marking content, templates help reduce setup time.
For safety and stability, the handheld head design is important. A stable focusing bracket helps keep the correct marking distance. If the hand is too unstable, the mark may become unclear. Therefore, when choosing a machine, buyers should check whether the marking head is comfortable to hold, whether the cable is flexible, and whether the machine is easy to move around the workshop.
Power selection also matters. Most mold steels can be marked by fiber laser, but the depth and darkness depend on material, surface treatment and marking parameters. If the customer needs a deeper mark, sample testing is recommended before order. A good supplier should be able to test the customer’s actual material and show the marking result.
For mold factories, the purpose of laser marking is not only to make the surface look nice. It helps with management, traceability and quality control. When every mold and cavity can be clearly identified, production becomes more organized.
Handheld fiber laser marking is a practical choice for mold workshops because it solves a real problem: the mold is too heavy to move, but the mark still needs to be permanent and professional.
